Project description

PhoQuS@UW "Fostering Excellence in Photonics and Quantum Science" is a project whose objective is to establish the Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw (FPUW) as a multidisciplinary centre of excellence in Photonics and Quantum Science. Photonics and Quantum Science are transforming 21st century science and engineering through delivering scientific and technological breakthroughs in areas as diverse as telecommunication, biomedical diagnostics, energy sources and environmental monitoring, as well as advancing our understanding of nature by exploring subtle quantum aspects of the microworld. Within this area, FPUW is in a unique position to establish itself as a European Centre of Excellence, as documented by its traditional excellence in theoretical and experimental physics, recent major infrastructure upgrades, as well as FPUW's ability to attract the brightest young scientists.

Ultrafast dynamics in soft matter

Femtochemistry group of Piotr Fita uses femtosecond laser systems for time-resolved spectroscopy and its application for studies of ultrafast processes in organic molecules.

Over the past years, these methods have been intensively used to study the excited-state properties of new molecules that may find applications as sensors or photosensitizers in photodynamic therapy of cancer. The group is equipped with modern spectroscopic tools for pump-probe experiments with femtosecond temporal resolution and for time-resolved fluorescence studies in solutions. Additionally, specialized apparatus has been designed and built for studying steady-state and time-resolved second harmonic generation at liquid/liquid interfaces. Well equipped workshop allows setting-up ad-hoc experiments for solving newly emerging problems. Attention of research is particularly focused on photochemical processes such as proton or electron transfer reactions, occurring on similar time scales as those of vibrational and solvent relaxation. Such ultrafast photochemistry differs totally from the 'slow' one and opens interesting perspectives for the coherent control of chemical reactions by light. More recently, the group has been also active in the investigation of ultrafast processes at liquid/liquid interfaces.

Strong Field Physics Group

Due to recent advances in laser technology, ultra high intense laser pulses of short durations are routinely produced in contemporary laboratories. The technological progress led to the development of petawatt lasers that deliver laser radiation in the visible spectrum with intensities as high as 1022 W/cm2. On the other hand, the synthesis of laser pulses which contain only a few optical cycles and last in the femtosecond or attosecond time-domain is currently feasible. Our theory group pursues the research in both these areas, i.e., in the area of high field physics and attoscience.

Quantum Optics VIII

Jachranka near Warsaw, Poland, May 26 - June 01, 2013

The conference was the eighth one in the series that have been organized every four years since 1980s. One of its central aims was to bring together researchers from various sub-fields of quantum optics to offer a broad overview of current developments in this exciting domain. Main topics of the conference included:

  • quantum degenerate Bose and Fermi gases
