Mission

Strengthening innovation capacity at the Faculty of Physics, Warsaw University (FPUW) is one of the PhoQuS@UW objectives. The rationale behind such an approach is the match between EU’s priorities and FPUW’s potential. Innovation is widely believed to become the vehicle for future economic growth. Therefore it has been placed at the heart of the EU 2020 strategy with Innovation Union as one of its 7 flagship initiatives. On the other hand, FPUW being a strong research facility (ranked as 151-200 at the Academic Ranking of World Universities in Physics 2012 ) has a high potential for innovation. It is especially true in the research areas covered by PhoQuS@UW, namely photonic sciences, since they constitute the background of so many modern-day inventions.

If successful, PhoQuS will transform the scientific environment at the Faculty from a primarily curiosity driven towards more application oriented and innovation driven, and will result in lively industry-university relations in the area of photonics and quantum sciences. Apart from speeding the technological progress, such positive relationships will bring other advantages, e.g. better training of students (and helping them find employment in the fields relevant to their studies), as well increasing university’s and scientists’ prestige and welfare (by licensing fees or industry donations).
